Why Revenue Systems Fail Under Pressure — and How Governance Fixes Them
Most recurring revenue businesses do not fail because they lack strategy.
They know who they want to serve. They have a vision. They have a plan. They have a go-to-market motion designed to drive growth.
Yet as organisations scale, something often changes.
Qualification standards soften. Incentives begin to pull behaviour away from intent. The pressure of quarterly targets overrides long-term thinking. The Revenue Operating Governance framework was developed to address this challenge.
Over the last several months, myself and Winning By Design Growth Institute Colleagues Kevin Brown and Travis Brown, have been developing the framework, which proposes that governance is the missing layer in many modern revenue organisations. It complements Revenue Architecture by providing the constraints that help ensure strategy survives contact with reality.
At the heart of the framework are seven governing principles covering areas such as the Revenue Operating North Star, Incentives, Qualification, Long-Term Optimisation, Enablement, and Data-Driven Decision Making. Together, these principles provide a practical model for aligning behaviour, protecting value, and enabling sustainable, compounding growth.
